Business Development Manager - South

Overall job purpose

To maintain a customer relationship portfolio of major customers in respect of their business requirements including maximising customer sales, service, and profit performance in the Absa Life businesses.

Main accountabilities

• Champion and manage business acquisition strategic plan in line with the Absa Life strategy
• Understand customer needs to propose offerings fit for the market by analysing relevant industry trends and patterns
• Stay abreast of developments and changes in the market by identifying business opportunities in the market that align to the business unit
• Identify product or solution gaps in the market and recommend corrective action to address the gaps to relevant internal key delivery area
• Evaluate newly proposed product or solution concept on technical feasibility, commercial viability, market compatibility and ensure alignment with customer requirements and financial attractiveness
• Adhere to the new channel development process and ensure alignment to product development frameworks
• Determine goals and objectives for the new channels within the business (i.e. percentage of sales the new channels will contribute to the business)
• Coordinate, manage and represent business development interests on the relevant forums by driving key agenda points for the unit
• Define target market and deliver on long term growth and sales targets by means of bulk acquisitions, specific business development interventions such as presentations to clients
• Provide input to sales strategic plans and regional specific sales action plans
• Engage with Regional Managers to maintain visibility and advance regional channels footprint with a partnering intent of growing market share
• Agree with the Line Manager on contracted deliveries to support the meeting and exceeding of sales targets for the year and to take accountability for the overall achievement of performance objectives within own portfolio
• Manage costs within the allocated budgets for the year, reconcile to approve budget on a monthly basis and forward to the Line Manager for approval and processing
• Collect market intelligence through research by reading articles, publications, internet, word of mouth and networking daily to keep abreast of market developments
• Assess market opportunities with respect to competitor sales sources by remaining in touch with market forces and influences
• Manage knowledge capital by collecting, storing, protecting, and distributing the results of market research
• Oversee the activities of the Business Development team to ensure effective delivery of the business plan
• Develop a high performing team by embedding formal performance development and informal coaching. Encourage frequent knowledge sharing between team members
• Determine and analyse development needs for the team and ensure that identified training requirements are budgeted for and executed
• Establish and maintain succession plan for the team
• Create effective workforce and recruitment demand plans to ensure that current and future business requirements can be met.

Education and experience required

• B Com Degree or any business-related field
• Three years managerial or leadership role in a sales environment within the Financial Services industry . Five years relevant working experience in business development role
• Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) in Life Insurance
• Membership of a professional insurance body
